LegitScript is pleased to have participated in this year’s Operation Pangea IX, a global operation coordinated by INTERPOL that targets the advertisement, sale, and supply of unapproved prescription drugs that pose a threat to public health and safety. This marks the seventh year that LegitScript has assisted with Pangea.
When Operation Pangea first took place in 2008, a mere ten countries (including the United States) participated. This year, over 190 police, customs, and health regulatory authorities from 103 countries took part in what Interpol refers to an “international week of action” – resulting in 393 arrests worldwide and the seizure of fake and illicit medicines worth an estimated $53 million USD.
This year, INTERPOL also reported that 4,932 websites selling illicit pharmaceuticals were suspended as a result of the operation. As in prior years, LegitScript joined other private sector companies such as Visa, MasterCard, Facebook, Twitter, and PayPal in supporting the operation by providing valuable intelligence.
Further highlights from INTERPOL’s press release:
- 12.2 million fake and illicit medicines seized
- 270,000 medical devices recovered
- 170,340 packages seized by customs and regulatory authorities
- 700 additional investigations launched by national authorities worldwide
LegitScript is proud to have had the opportunity to participate in Operation Pangea IX. Of course, we will continue our own daily outreach to registrars, encouraging them to shut down rogue pharmacies. At LegitScript, every week is a week of action!
