This week, LegitScript challenged several hundred domain name registrations used by Rogue Internet pharmacies. One of the interesting dimensions to this week’s suspension requests was a new focus on 60 .NAME domains.
What makes .NAME domains unique and interesting? Unlike .com, .info or any other domain names, .NAME domains are only supposed to be used for “Personal Names” (e.g., johnsmith.name or amandajones.name). Indeed, ICANN has imposed that requirement, and Registrars are supposed to adhere to it.
As shown below, there are several dozen rogue Internet pharmacies with domain names like vicodinonline.name. (Presumably not a “personal name”!) Some of these, such as viagra.name or cialis.name, use a fraudulent .NAME domain name registration to infringe upon well-known trademarks.
We’ll keep track of whether the Registrars suspend these websites and report back. Some of the Registrars below, such as GoDaddy and Directi, have consistently shown leadership in enforcing their own Terms and Conditions.
