Companies onboard merchants often look only at a merchant's website during the underwriting process; this excludes the rest of the merchant's internet presence, including the types of ads they run to drive traffic to the website. Even if a website is innocuous, a merchant's ads can be problematic and subject to scrutiny from regulators and card brands.
