For years, LegitScript Certification has served a specific function: helping payment processors, acquiring banks, and advertising platforms protect their ecosystems from businesses operating outside applicable laws and regulations. If a healthcare company or substance use disorder treatment organization wanted to advertise on major online platforms or maintain reliable payment processing, Certification was often the first step toward meeting the requirements involved.
That role hasn’t gone away, but it is expanding. Increasingly, the value of LegitScript Certification is being recognized by a new market: the patients and consumers making decisions about where to get their medications and care.

As the options for online care grow, people are looking for a clear, reliable way to validate the legitimacy of healthcare providers and their business. That’s exactly what LegitScript Certification is designed to represent. It signals that a business has been evaluated against LegitScript’s Certification Standards, which are built on applicable laws and regulations governing the products and services being offered. An active LegitScript Certification Seal on a website means that this business has been independently reviewed and has met a defined standard in demonstrating compliance.
Why Checking Certification Status Matters
As the visibility and importance of LegitScript Certification has grown, so has interest from bad actors in exploiting it. As part of our monitoring program, when we come across websites misrepresenting their business as LegitScript-certified, we take action to address it. We see businesses do this in a variety of ways: displaying a LegitScript Certification Seal despite never being certified; continuing to display it after losing certification; or using look-alike branding designed to create a false impression of legitimacy. When we identify this kind of behavior, we take action.
This is precisely why a LegitScript Certification Seal on a website is not, by itself, enough to confirm that a business is currently certified. Certification status can change. Businesses gain certification, and businesses lose it, sometimes quickly, when compliance concerns arise. And as tactics for misrepresenting certification become more sophisticated, a static image on a webpage simply isn’t a reliable enough signal on its own.
This post is here to walk you through what the LegitScript Certification Seal actually represents, how to locate it, how to verify that a business is actively certified, and what to do if something looks off.
What to Look For
The LegitScript Certification Seal you’ll see on a certified business’s website is dynamic, meaning it contains a live hyperlink directly to that business’s certification status page on LegitScript’s official website (legitscript.com). Clicking it will take you straight to a page confirming the business’s current certification status, not just an image sitting statically on the page.

As shown on the website of this imagined telehealth provider, companies often include their LegitScript seal in the footer of their website. Clicking a valid seal will take you straight to a page confirming the business’s current certification status.
Verify Directly on legitscript.com
The most reliable way to check whether a website is currently certified is to go straight to the source. You can search and verify the certification status of any website at: https://www.legitscript.com/websites/

All LegitScript-certified websites are searchable in LegitScript’s database at legitscript.com/websites, as shown with this imagined telehealth provider.
Because this tool reflects real-time certification status, it will always be more accurate than relying on a seal image alone, especially for a business whose certification may have recently changed.
Watch for Imitations
Bad actors don’t always attempt an exact copy. Often, they rely on close approximations that are subtle enough to be mistaken for the real thing at a glance, including LegitScript’s name, seal, or branding. This can show up in a few different ways. For example, the wording might be slightly off, such as referring to “Legit Script” as two separate words instead of one. The coloring or fonts used in the seal might not quite match LegitScript’s official version. Even the Certification Seal itself may be a slightly altered or lower-quality version of the real seal. Small inconsistencies like these, whether in the name, the colors, the typography, or the logo itself, can be a signal that what you’re looking at isn’t an authentic LegitScript Certification Seal.
If Something Looks Off
If you come across a website that appears to be misrepresenting itself as LegitScript-certified, or a certified business you believe may be violating our Certification Standards, we want to know. Every report we receive is reviewed and, where warranted, acted upon. Enforcement ranges from requiring remediation, to suspending certification, to pursuing legal action against entities falsely claiming to be LegitScript-certified. Reports from consumers and partners like you play a real role in helping us identify issues we might not otherwise catch.
You can report a concern directly here:

In our next post within this series, we’ll go deeper into this reporting feature, including how it works, what to include in a report, and how using it helps protect the broader healthcare ecosystem.
A Responsibility We Take Seriously
LegitScript has certified more than 10,000 domains as meeting our Certification Standards, and classified and reported on more than 140,000 internet pharmacy websites operating outside applicable regulations. That scale reflects the role we play across the health and wellness ecosystem, sitting between patients, businesses, payment processors, and advertising platforms, all of whom rely on certification to mean something real. It’s a responsibility we take seriously.
That’s exactly why the LegitScript Certification Seal can be trusted. Every certified business has been evaluated against real standards, grounded in applicable laws and regulations, not just marketing language. But trust starts with verification, and a seal is only as good as its authenticity. Confirming its validity only takes a moment.
The next time you see the LegitScript Certification Seal on a website, take that extra moment. When you do, you’re not just protecting yourself, you’re reinforcing a system built to keep this entire industry more transparent, more accountable, and safer for everyone using it.
