7-OH-Mitragynine: A Dangerous New Trend in the Kratom Industry

A new class of high-potency kratom derivatives is rapidly gaining traction across e-commerce, with 7-Hydroxymitragynine (7-OH-mitragynine) leading this dangerous market shift. Often sold as concentrated tablets or sublingual strips, these largely unregulated products represent a significant departure from traditional kratom, introducing severe risks to both consumers and the payment ecosystem.

For payment providers, the rise of 7-OH-mitragynine is more than a health concern: it is a direct path to card brand violations, regulatory scrutiny, and potential reputational damage. Understanding the specific dangers and the evolving legal status of this compound is essential for any business managing high-risk merchant portfolios.

What is 7-Hydroxymitragynine and How is it Related to Kratom?

Along with mitragynine, 7-Hydroxymitragynine is one of the two main active chemical compounds found in kratom, which is a psychoactive substance known to cause symptoms such as seizures and liver toxicity. Both chemicals bind to opioid receptors in the brain, producing effects similar to opioid drugs like codeine. Because of this, kratom has become a common self-treatment for ailments stemming from opioid withdrawal.

While widely available for sale in the United States, kratom products remain on shaky regulatory ground. The substance has been the subject of several FDA warning letters and government seizures due to its deadly risks. Though not officially scheduled as a controlled substance by the DEA, it is banned in several US states and controlled in various international jurisdictions. Despite this dubious legality, the FDA maintains that 7-OH-mitragynine is not legally marketable as a drug and is not considered safe in food or supplements.

The Dangers of a Potent and Untested Product

Despite the FDA taking steps to restrict access to these products, LegitScript’s analysts have recently observed an increase in the sale of 7-OH-mitragynine products within merchant portfolios. These products are typically seen as ingestible tablets or strips that contain high percentages of the compound, often marketed as a “superior kratom experience.”

Customers unaware of the differences between these semi-synthetic products and traditional kratom may believe they are purchasing a familiar, “natural” product. In reality, consumers may be unknowingly exposing themselves to high-dose products that have not been tested for safety and may contain unknown harmful chemicals. Even without the risks associated with an untested product, 7-OH-mitragynine carries all the typical health risks of kratom, including substance dependence.

Physical Risk Translates to Payments Risk

Products that present risk for consumers automatically present risk for payment processors due to increased scrutiny from law enforcement and regulatory bodies. Because 7-OH-mitragynine is considered a psychoactive substance, conducting transactions for such products violates card brand rules and can lead to heavy fines. Additionally, the possibility of physical harm to the consumer poses a reputational risk for payment processors and a potential loss of trust in their brand.
