The Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan Occurred in June 1969

June 28, 1969, the New York City police raided The Stonewall Inn — an established gay club — with such force it sparked a riot and six days of violent protest. Though we still celebrate Pride Month in June, the movement has evolved from protesting the harassment and persecution of LGBTQ+ individuals to celebrating the LGBTQ+ community.

People Who Identify as LGBTQ+ Are at a Higher Risk Because of the Social Stigma

Research shows people who identify as LGBTQ+ experience harassment and discrimination more frequently than their heterosexual or cisgender counterparts.

This mistreatment can have serious consequences. Results from the 2021 and 2022 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health show that LGBTQ+ individuals are more likely to experience mental health issues and substance use disorder(s) — sometimes co-occurring.

Additionally, the report found serious mental illness is three times more prevalent among bisexual men than heterosexual men. Furthermore, bisexual women were three times more likely than straight women to have an opioid use disorder.

SAMHSA reports roughly one-third of gay men, bisexual men, and bisexual women, as well as one-quarter of lesbian women, have experienced a substance use disorder.

Providing Mental Health and Substance Use Treatment Services for the LGBTQ+ Community Is Vital

The data is clear. Individuals who identify as LGBTQ+ are at a higher risk of experiencing mental health issues and/or substance use disorders than their heteronormative counterparts. Organizations that prioritize the care of LGBTQ+ community members are limited — and indispensable.
